Savannah - (Conclusion)

Tybee Island

For our final excursion, we chose to spend the rest of our time before our evening flight home at Tybee Island. Tybee Island is a beach resort community located about 30 minutes from Savannah. Once again, we were blessed with beautiful weather. Since we only had a few hours, our first stop was at the Tybee Island Visitor Center to get suggestions on how to spend our limited time. The nice lady there suggested checking out the lighthouse and then visiting nearby North Beach. We drove to the lighthouse but decided not to pay to climb it. There were several other historical structures in the area included in the admission price. We were not sure we could see all of them in our limited time; therefore, we headed straight for the beach instead for a nice walk.

We finished off our time on Tybee Island with lunch at the Original Crab Shack. I would not quite refer to this place as a shack. It has plenty of seating – both indoors and outdoors. It is decorated with all types of interesting seafaring equipment. There is also a live chicken that walks around the place. We enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch on the covered outside dining area. I loved the gumbo and my Low Country Boil plate.

With that, we said goodbye to Tybee Island and drove to the Savannah airport to return the rental car. Neither the airport nor our flight was crowded. In fact, the flight attendants changed everyone’s seat assignment on this huge, nearly empty airplane to the more roomy seats. I could actually extend my legs fully and still not touch the seat in front of me! Kudos to United Airlines for this special treat. It was a nice ending to a very pleasant getaway. Main Page...
